myAppBox – The most fun way to find Palm Pre and Pixi apps

When we launched the first ever Palm Pre and Pixi app catalog viewer back in December the response was crazy!  But the minute we launched, we started to plan for what the catalog viewer would eventually become.  What we quickly decided was that we needed a new platform to build upon.  Well that new platform is available now, and we are calling it myAppBox.

We have so much in store for myAppBox as it will continue to receive updates week after week.  With myAppBox’s introduction, we also setup a Facebook page for everyone to connect on.  So feel free to check us out and become a fan, we will continue to publish news to that site as well as our blog.  But on Facebook we will soon have a place to provide feedback and other things.

Have fun browsing!

Now All of Our App Goodness Available via RSS

Many of you have asked…and now we can!  As of now you can get tons of our great app stats via RSS.  Thanks to Palm’s new RSS feeds, we created a nice little mashup that combines everything they had to offer along with some information we have gathered for the last several months.  So without further ado…check out all our Available Feeds.

Feature your app – now available!

Well our catalog viewer has had a great response so far and the requests have been flying in for apps to be featured.  Last night we released the first batch of featured apps, each of which have had over 5,000 impressions in less than 24 hours!

Our mission at webOS School has and always will be, to provide as many free high quality resources to learn how to develop for webOS as possible.   We think we can do that while at the same time offering developers a set of great tools to help them succeed after they have developed their apps.  The first of which, we are launching today; the ability to feature your app and customize your app’s listing in our catalog viewer.

We hope you enjoy these new features, and thanks for supporting us!

You can find more details about these features and their pricing here, you can even preview what your app will look like as a featured app on our site.  Give it a shot!

Just Launched! webOS School App Catalog Stats

Ever since the webOS App Catalog has launched, we’ve been craving a place on the web to view apps in the catalog.  Not that it’s painful to find an app using your phone… but with a little more screen real estate you can fit more useful information on there.  So today, we’re announcing the webOS School App Catalog Viewer.

Have you ever wondered how much PayPal or Palm have brought in on any particular day?  How about the number of downloads a particular app has received over time?  Even just knowing what the top downloaded apps are, and a quick view of new apps.  Well our first version of the Catalog Viewer has all that and more, plus some plans for even more stats and features  down the road.  Run along now… check out the webOS School App Catalog Viewer.

Video: whats new in webOS 1.3.1 for developers

Palm has made lots of updates in webOS 1.3.1 for users/consumers, but we were more interested in the things that have changed for developers.  Justin and I were talking about it earlier this morning…then decided to make a recording available for everyone.  We figured you might benefit from the discussion we had.  We talk about four main updates:

  1. The DeviceInfo object, used to get information about the device the app is running on.
  2. An automatic way to generate a help scene.
  3. Enhancements to allow you to keep your phone from going dim while your app is running.
  4. New Sandbox security measures that will keep you from accessing all but a few directories.

You can get to the video on our web site.

Enjoy, and happy coding!

webOS Videos and Source Available from Iowa Code Camp

Iowa Code Camp was a great event, we had a huge audience online as well as in-person to catch our webOS Intro sessions.  We went through creating an interactive game, lots of UI components and touched on many common services available in webOS.  In all, we had some 3 and a half hours of free webOS material!

Lots of people asked why the heck we are doing what we are doing…well it is simple, we believe in webOS and its community; we want to do everything we can to help it thrive.  With that said, we are going to continue to share all the material we possibly can and it all starts with the recordings and source from Iowa Code Camp…all 3 hours and 30 some minutes worth!  So without further ado…we decided to create a home for all of the material we are eventually going to share with the community.  You can get to all of this material after creating an account at webOS School.  If you are already signed up then you can get straight to the videos and source in our Developer Reference section.

Enjoy and happy coding!

P.S. Thanks to Bill King from palmpredeveloper.glifechurch.com!  Even though we ended up using our own recordings from Iowa Code Camp, there was a period of time we thought we lost them…well before we restored them, Bill stepped up and offered us some recordings he made while he attended the event.  Thanks Bill!
